Four days before Joseph B. Hill was set to become vice president, chief equity, diversity and inclusion officer at Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston he received an email that baffled him. So reports NBC News.

Hill says his lawyer, Mark Oberti, told him two weeks later that Memorial Hermann deemed Hill “was not a good fit" even after going through more than 12 interviews over six weeks. Oberti also told his client that the company’s lawyer said they were not OK with Hill asking about hiring workers for his team, that he wanted a bigger relocation budget, that he charged the company for renting a luxury car and that “I am too sensitive about race issues.”

Had Memorial Hermann asked him about the luxury car, Hill says they would have learned that it was his own car.

Memorial Hermann in a statement notes that “sometimes, during the hiring or onboarding process, circumstances can change that may lead to an offer of employment being rescinded. Out of respect for all individuals involved, it is Memorial Hermann’s practice not to discuss personnel matters publicly.”
