IBM Fights Back Against Age Bias Suit

IBM is defending itself against a lawsuit that alleges the firm engaged in age discrimination and that cites one executive referring to older employees as “dinobabies.” So reports Fortune.

IBMThe lawsuit, unsealed last month, notes the executive, whose name is not revealed, discussing plans to “accelerate change by inviting the ‘dinobabies’ (new species) to leave” and make them an “extinct species,” court documents show. IBM executives also talked about implementing a “relocation” program, where older workers would be asked to relocate or leave the firm. IBM rejected the age discrimination allegations.

“Some language in emails between former IBM executives that has been reported is not consistent with the respect IBM has for its employees and as the facts clearly show, it does not reflect company practices or policies,” said Chris Mumma, a spokesperson for IBM.

Nickle LaMoreaux, chief human resources officer for IBM, noted in a statement last month that the company did not discriminate based on age and that the reason it fired workers was due to the shifting business climate.

In a 2019 Big Think article, former vice president of HR for IBM, Alan Wild, said the firm had “laid off 50,000 to 100,000 employees in just the last several years” to make itself seem like “[a] cool, trendy organization,” like Google or Amazon, and not like “an old fuddy duddy organization.”
