Recruiters Tout Cheap Housing to Woo Workers in Germany

With unemployment in Germany at 5.4%, a record low, and 1.2 million jobs that are unfilled, German companies are coming up with unique ways to win over talent. So reports Bloomberg.

Some firms are offering to subsidize housing for prized prospects, while others offer employer-paid overseas trips and ski outings. The manufacturing, construction and healthcare industries, especially, are having a rough time and may have to slow down production due to not having enough workers, the European Union notes.

Recruiting is "a huge challenge--that's something we have in common with companies across Germany," says Maren Kroll, HR head at Harry's, a shaving-kit manufacturer headquartered in New York. Harry's has a factory in Eisfeld, Germany, where Kroll works.

Harry's subsidizes lunches, hosts English classes and has a share-distribution program for its employees. "Talented professionals are hard to find, so we have to create conditions that are attractive," Kroll says.
