HR Applicant Vetting Systems Fail U.S. Military Vets

Tracking systems used by human resources that vet job candidates’ applications are proving an obstacle for U.S. military veterans searching for civilian jobs. So reports Human Resource Executive.

“Applicant tracking systems are too rigid and formulaic, and they often weed out veterans because they don’t realize their military experience can be translated to civilian experience,” says Mandy Price, co-founder and CEO of Kanarys, a diversity, equity and inclusion technology services and solution provider.

These misses can be as basic as failing to recognize a word like “General” when the tracking system is searching for the term “Manager” for applicants’ managerial experience, Price notes.

John Register, a U.S. Army combat veteran, and member of Kanarys’ advisory board and CEO of Inspired Communications Int., suggests that prior to listing a job post hiring managers and HR leaders should get on the same page when it comes to using a common language. “Not doing so misses out on a lot of talent just because the language is different,” Register says. “I believe this is one of the greatest challenges veterans and employers face when trying to obtain the best talent for a position.”
