Ground Rules for Texting the Boss

While texting is a popular way for friends and family to communicate, it also is gaining traction with bosses. So reports Money.

About four in 10 employers plan to text to set up interviews, CareerBuilder.com found from its annual job survey. The trend will gain traction as a smartphone-hooked generation rises to leadership roles. “We’re going to see more and more of that as these younger, digitally savvy employees appear in the workplace,” said Jim Link, chief human resources officer at Randstad North America.

And, if your boss does hit you up on text, there are a few things to remember. Limit texting to work hours and follow your boss’ lead before you hit the send button. That means never being more loose than your boss in your texting. Refraining from sending novel-size messages is also recommended as is not coming off as a pre-teen with your abbreviations. And, steer clear of trying to be funny. 

“It’s very, very easy to cross boundaries through text messages,” said Crystal Marsh, a career coach. “It shouldn’t be used for jokes.”
