Staying On HR’s Radar Post-Interview

Nailing an interview may not mean much if the job candidate fails to followup. So reports Business Insider.

Job seekers can take several steps post-interview to bolster their chances of being hired, says Amanda Augustine, career-advice expert for TopResume.

“I know clients who point-blank were told they didn’t get the job because they didn’t follow up after the interview,” Augustine says. “Don’t be that person!”

Following an interview, a candidate should find out how and who to followup with, get the interviewers’ contact information and analyze how it went. But only go through these steps after walking far enough away from the interview site, says Rosemary Haefner, chief human resources officer for CareerBuilder.

“What did I say well and how did the interviewer react?” Haefner suggests interviewees ask themselves shortly after leaving the interview site. “Was there something I didn’t provide a strong answer for that I should clarify?”

Job candidates should ask themselves how they felt about the company and reach out to a recruiter and ask that they follow up with the interviewer the same day. Candidates also should write a detailed thank you note that is unique for each person they met.

“A quick thank you is expected by most hiring managers,” Haefner says. “Chances are you won’t win the job based solely on sending a thank you note, but you will stick out like a sore thumb for not sending one.” And while it may be tough, candidates should still reach out and thank their interviewers if they don’t get the job.
