Many Workers Ready to Jump Ship, But Have Regrets Later On

A number of studies have been done about employees changing jobs, with some of the reasons – and regrets – for leaving rather eye-opening. So reports Forbes.

Just under a third of workers surveyed in Mercer’s 'What’s Working' study say they’re actively looking for a new job. Another one, conducted by consulting powerhouse Accenture, cites common reasons for job-hunting among respondents who are currently employed:

First was lack of recognition (43%); followed by dislike of internal politics (35%); in a dead heat for third place (31%) were dislike of the boss and lack of empowerment.

Some of the findings / take-aways, include:

  • Lack of appreciation/recognition came out as the top reason employees leave – even when they shouldn’t. This tends to be more of a workplace culture issue than an individual worker’s doing, in many cases, according to Forbes.
  • Focus on leaving the “wrong” job rather than finding the “right” one. Many people who quit their jobs reported being sorry later for not evaluating their options more carefully instead of jumping ship to escape an unhappy situation.
  • Respondents commonly regretted not producing better work at the jobs they left, whether or not the obstacles in their way were of their own doing.
