Hospital Cans Employee Who Criticized Nursing Homes to Newspaper

An Indiana hospital fired an employee late last month after she criticized nursing homes to The New York Times for illegally dropping off patients at emergency rooms and psychiatric hospitals. So reports The New York Times.

red cross 303433 640smallKimberly Jackson, who had been a discharge planner at NeuroBehavioral Hospital, said these patients were deemed unprofitable. The hospital fired Jackson, noting that she violated its media policy, said Rebecca Holloway, the hospital’s corporate director of human resources.

Jackson talked with the newspaper, saying that nursing homes in Illinois and Michigan regularly moved older and disabled patients to her hospital. She also told The Times that most of these patients were not psychotic.

“The homes seem to be purposely taking symptoms of dementia as evidence of psychosis,” Jackson had told The Times.
