Apple Hires Its First Chief People Officer

Apple has created its first chief people officer role that will result in a 30-year veteran of the company turning over her human resources responsibilities to the newcomer. So reports Apple Magazine.

AppleCarol Surface, who is executive vice president of human resources at medical device company Medtronic, will begin her new role next month. She will report directly to Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Surface has worked in her current role at Medtronic for almost 10 years and has held a similar role with Best Buy. She also worked for more than 10 years in PepsiCo’s HR and Personnel department.

Upon Surface’s arrival, Deirdre O’Brien will relinquish her HR responsibilities. She has worked as senior vice president of Retail + People since 2019 and will solely focus on retail once Surface officially starts. O’Brien served as vice president of worldwide sales and operations before her promotion to VP of People in 2017.
