New Law Subjects AI Employment Decision Tools To Bias Audits  

New York City has adopted a rule that seeks to keep a close eye on so-called automated employment decision tools and artificial intelligence that are used by employers. So reports The National Law Review.

artificial intelligence 4389372 1280The rule, from the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, becomes effective July 5 and would mandate that employers and employment agencies run automated employment decision tools through a bias audit. Employers would also need to tell workers and job recruits that these tools are being tapped to vet them.

“A ‘bias audit’ is defined as ‘an impartial evaluation by an independent auditor’ to assess the tool’s potential ‘disparate impact’ on sex, race, and ethnicity,” the publication reports. “The employer or employment agency must also post a ‘summary of the results of the most recent bias audit’ on its website.”
