Ex-Amazon Manager Sentenced to 16 Years For A $9M+ Fraud

A 32-year-old Atlanta woman who worked as an operations manager at Amazon was the “mastermind” of a scheme that netted her more than $9.4 million from Amazon.com. That's according to the United States Attorney’s Office Northern District of Georgia.

AmazonKayricka Wortham led at least six other people as part of the scheme, which entailed helping her to register phony businesses in Amazon’s vendor system, the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Northern District of Georgia noted in a statement.

Wortham used the fake invoices made to these businesses to amass the $9.5 million, and along with her partner, bought a home in Smyrna, Georgia worth nearly $1 million, a 2022 Tesla Model X, a 2019 Lamborghini Urus and other luxury vehicles. Wortham was sentenced to 16 years in federal prison. She also needs to pay Amazon almost $9.5 million in restitution.

“The defendant abused her position of trust at Amazon to steal nearly $10 million from the company based on a brazen fraud scheme involving fake vendors and fictitious invoices,” U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan said. “She then committed new crimes while on bond, even creating a fake dismissal document purporting to be from the court and that included the forged signature of the Chief U.S. District Judge, all for the purpose of misleading a franchising company about the status of her criminal charges. Her prison sentence recognizes the magnitude of her fraud and serves to protect the integrity of our courts and justice system.”
