Staff who live close to an office, within 50 miles, will be required to come in at least two times a week, Zoom noted in an email response, adding that “we believe that a structured hybrid approach” is the most effective work arrangement.
The San Jose-based company owns plenty of office space and has many local workers, so its decision is “sensible,” Nicholas Bloom, an economics professor at Stanford University who researches remote work, wrote in a Twitter post.
“If you are paying for office space and high Bay Area salaries it makes sense to operate on a hybrid schedule,” Bloom tweeted, also noting that most employees with the company were currently coming into the office.
