Politics Aside, Gun Violence May Be America's Next Healthcare Crisis

As HR professionals, we've all been helping our organizations and employees adapt to ObamaCare and its effect overall on the nation's health insurance system. Now, however, even with yet another mass shooting on a college campus sounding a clarion call in some circles for dealing with the epidemic of gun violence, President Obama's nomination for Surgeon General is being held up by Congress. The main reason: he views gun violence as a national health crisis in desperate need of treatment, which threatens the all-powerful National Rifle Association and influential gun lobby on K Street. So reports NBC News.

But with nearly two-thirds of the more than 30,000 deaths caused by gun violence in a recent year attributed to suicide, it's difficult to argue with the position taken by the nominee, Harvard Medical School physician Vivek Halegere Murthy. The workplace has hardly been immune from mass shootings or suicides, either. Maybe it's time employers started to take gun violence seriously as a health issue, too.
