Adding a Little Color to the Work Day

Yoga. Meditation. Taking a walk at lunchtime. Logging off at home. The airwaves are filled with constant suggestions about how to relax, “de-stress,” give us all a break from our multi-tasking, technology-obsessed lives. Now, it seems, over-taxed professionals are reaching back in time for a basic, if long-neglected remedy: Crayola therapy.

Adult coloring books (many with “therapy” in the title) have been gaining in popularity for the last few years – some even finding their way onto best-seller lists.

The article's author describes a group coloring exercise in her office, where individual style said a lot about the workplace personalities of the participants. Some lacked the patience to stay within the lines; others grew frustrated if their marking pens “bled” through the paper; still others seemed to miss the relaxation “forest” for the “trees” of worrying about the color scheme or how the final product would look.

All in all, the group members seemed to learn a great deal about their own ability (or inability) to relax easily, and slow down long enough to not have to multi-task for a little while. Maybe coloring will become the new coffee break. What’s next? Afternoon naps, anyone?
