Industrial Manufacturer Has Artificial Intelligence Chief Report to HR  

Human resources may not seem like the obvious place for a newly hired head of artificial intelligence to report to, but that is exactly what Stanley Black & Decker CEO Jim Loree required upon making the hire last year. So reports Fortune.

artificial intelligence 4389372 1280“One of the things about A.I. and technology in general—it is really there to augment human resources,” Loree noted earlier this month at the Fortune Brainstorm A.I. in Boston. “People plus technology is at the center of our operations model.”

The Connecticut-based industrial tool manufacturer hired Mukesh Dalal to run the company’s AI department. Dalal said at first he thought being under HR was “very strange.”

“But to Jim’s point, you want A.I. and people to work together,” Dalal said.

While having Dalal under HR was temporary and he is no longer in that department, he noted the experience was valuable and that he would “not be surprised if I am back to HR” in the future.
