BetterThe online mortgage firm’s board of directors in a letter sent to employees last month noted that Garg used his leave of absence to “reflect on his leadership, reconnect with the values that make Better great and work closely with an executive coach.”

On December 1, Garg lashed out at his staff in messages that Fortune viewed on an anonymous professional network. Garg fired more than 900 workers in the U.S. and India, about 10% of his total workforce, on that one day, which had cited two people with knowledge of the matter.

“I understand how hard these past few weeks have been. I am deeply sorry for the angst, distraction and embarrassment my actions have caused,” Garg wrote in his own letter to employees last month. “I've spent a lot of time thinking about where we are as a company and the type of leadership Better needs ... and the leader I want to be.”
