Southwest Airlines’ technological collapse led to the cancellation of almost 17,000 flights during a holiday week in December, but that failure highlights the important role across different industries that human resources can play in transforming digital capabilities. So reports Human Resource Executive.

Southwest airlines“True digital transformation requires a clear organization-wide vision of the opportunity that looks at the broad shifts in strategy and culture that will be enabled by technology,” Nick Petschek and Martha Deery write in Human Resource Executive. “It entails new potential realities as well: hiring a new kind of workforce for the future, phasing out certain roles and the development of new cultures and capabilities.”

Both Petschek and Deery work at Kotter, a global consulting firm, where he is director and she is principal. While much of an organization’s digital transformation will depend with its IT departments, HR can play a crucial role in “getting the entire organization on the same page about impending changes, and thinking holistically about how a transformation will operate within the broader business ecosystem,” Petschek and Deery write.

“With their close understanding of how the business and its people operate, HR leaders are central to this process as a bridge between employees, organizational objectives and workplace efficiency,” they note.
