Coming Soon to an Office Near You: The ‘Gamification’ of Life

“Shall… we… play… a… game?” was the robotic invitation from a hacked government computer in the futuristic 1980s film “War Games.”

While that image may seem quaint by today’s ultra-high-tech standards, certain software programs developed in Silicon Valley for the video-game industry may be a glimpse of a far more ominous trend. It’s not global thermonuclear war, but can the so-called “gamification” of the workplace – where employees are driven by a system of metrics akin to what motivates videogame characters – turn us all into HAL?
