Five Workplace Trends HR Pros Need to Know

One would expect a national survey of employers with 50+ employees (the same population, coincidentally, most impacted by the Affordable Care Act) to reflect significant change since the onset of the Great Recession in 2008. So reports Familiesandwork.org blog.

Indeed, results from the ongoing National Study of Employers – conducted jointly by the Families and Work Institute (FWI) in partnership with the SHRM – are certainly indicative of major workplace transitions in the past six years. What's less expected, however, is the direction some of these trends are heading.

Here are the five trends highlighted in the post:

• The 1993 Family and Medical Leave Act has leveled the playing field
• Demographics are destiny though legal and attitudinal shifts have an impact
• Smaller employers are leaders in providing flexibility and in not increasing co-pays in health insurance
• Telecommuting is on the rise.
• The reason for providing employee supportive programs is the retention of employees.

Even seasoned HR professionals may find some of them surprising.
