Is Sitting the New Smoking?

According to research done by scientists at the Mayo Clinic and other institutions, excessive sitting – particularly at the office, where millions of Americans sit for more than 5½ hours per day – may be the culprit behind elevated levels of obesity, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and certain cancers. So reports Smithsonian Mag.

 

And the remedy may not be a rigorous workout at the gym after a long, sedentary day (compared by one school of thought to treating a pack-a-day smoking habit with a daily jog), but simply more standing and moving around during the work day. One idea that’s garnering increasing attention among workplace ergonomists is “standing” desks that can be adjusted to accommodate a combination of sitting and standing.
